Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in central nervous system physiology, anatomy and trauma? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research intensive Universities?

This International Spinal Research Trust funded position is available for a fixed term of 18 months to investigate how epidural electrical stimulation of the spinal cord can be applied to help recover bladder function following severe injuries to the spinal cord. We will combine expertise from different fields, including mechanical and electrical engineering, neurosciences, physiology and anatomy. This innovative project will develop new technology and new protocols to provide new insights and procedures for bladder control after severe spinal cord injury.

Work will be carried out in the School of Biomedical Sciences, which includes physiologists, biochemists and physicists and will be supervised by Dr Ronaldo Ichiyama and Dr Samit Chakrabarty (SBMS), in collaboration with Dr Peter Culmer and Dr Ali Alazmani (School of Mechanical Engineering) and Dr H. Harriet Chang (University of California-Irvine, USA).

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a strong interest in systems neuroscience, spinal cord injuries and bladder function. You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in Neurosciences, Physiology, Sports and Exercise Sciences or a closely allied discipline with some experience in surgery and behavioural manipulations. Experience in techniques such as histology, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence is also desirable.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies. The University is a charter member of Athena SWAN (the national body that promotes gender equality in higher education), and the Faculty of Biological Sciences gained a Bronze award in 2014 and submitted an application for a Silver award in April 2017.  We are proud to be an inclusive Faculty that values all staff, and are happy to consider job share applications and requests for flexible working arrangements from our employees.
