Ouch! We have all felt pain before, for example, when we stub our big toe or visit the dentist. Sometimes, just hearing the buzz of the dentist’s drill can send a “shiver of pain” down our spine. What is going on inside our brain when we feel pain or when we expect something painful to happen?
This Holmes lecture will explore how scientists look inside your body when you feel pain. Discover how scientists investigate the messages sent by your brain to other parts of your body when you are in pain. How scientists use this information to understand why we feel pain, why we sometimes feel “shivers of pain”, and how we can overcome and ignore pain.
