The BNA's "Careers in Neuroscience" event on 10 October 2024 offered an engaging look at the many career paths that a background in neuroscience can lead to. Attendees had the chance to dive into discussions on a range of topics—from networking and salary expectations to how life events and shifts in interests can guide career changes. Students particularly appreciated the event’s informal yet candid atmosphere, with panellists openly discussing their personal career experiences and pathways, including challenges in academia, consulting, and editorial roles.
The panel brought together a dynamic mix of professionals. Dr Ruth Weir shared her insights on the connection between scientific research and entrepreneurship, focusing on skills like problem-solving and adaptability. Dr Keri Tochiki talked about moving from research into consulting with Accenture, highlighting how networking helped her navigate this shift. Dr Sophie Morgan discussed her move from lab work to a role in science editing at Nature Communications, which lets her stay involved in neuroscience outside the lab. Dr Sandrine Géranton offered an academic angle, explaining the level of dedication required for success in academia, while Dr Rebecca McKelvey noted how a PhD provides versatile skills that open doors beyond academia, like her work with Google DeepMind.
Students found the diverse career stories incredibly motivating, especially seeing how a neuroscience background applies to roles outside typical research. The event also gave attendees a valuable networking opportunity to connect with peers who share similar interests. With events like this, BNA continues to offer valuable resources for students and early-career professionals, encouraging exploration in neuroscience and related fields.
